Have you read ‘Who is Abdullah?’ in our part 1 of the Abdullah series? If not, read it now. Inshallah, that will aid you to understand the profound topic which covers the relationship between ‘ a Servant and his Lord’.
In the last blog we came to terms with who is Allah ﷻ (God) and who is the Abd’ (servant). Today, we will be discovering who the true Abd is, the conflict of Aboodiyah (servanthood) amongst the nature of mankind and how to become ‘Abdullah’.
Who is the true Abd’ (Servant of Allah)?
In reality, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is the best incarnation of the true servant of Allah as Allah ﷻ Himself refers to his Beloved various times in the Holy Qu’ran using this special term of Abd’:
سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي أَسْرَىٰ بِعَبْدِهِ لَيْلًا مِنَ الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ الْأَقْصَى
“Exalted is He who took His Servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al- Aqsa” (Holy Quran 17:1).
فَأَوْحَىٰ إِلَىٰ عَبْدِهِ مَا أَوْحَىٰ
“And He revealed to His servant that which He revealed” (Holy Quran 53:5).
One of the Prophet’s ﷺ blessed nicknames was Abdullah عبد الله and his blessed life had been a true example of being the servant of Allah ﷻ. For, he ﷺ worshipped Allah alone and for Allah’s pleasure only. His lifestyle and character displayed his subservience, servitude and enslavement to Allah Azawajjal alone.
His worship and his service to creation was only for the pleasure of Allah ﷻ and through his behaviour we can also learn how to become عبد الله or امة الله .
Thus, following the Sunnah of the Glory of humanityﷺ in all sense of the term, and this over any worldly custom and culture prompt the person toward the incarnation of the reality of the prophetic character, a Quranic human being and that is the true Abdullah.
The reality of Sons of Adam
Abu ‘Ali al-Daqqaq (RA) said:
“You are the servant of whoever holds you in his bondage. If you are in the bondage of your soul, then you are its servant; if you are in the bondage of this world of yours, then you are its servant.”
The unfortunate reality is that human beings are servant/worshippers of that which his/her efforts are with, that which is a motivation or drive for their actions.
Some of us are:
- Abdud-Dinar (Wealth)
- Abdus-Suhrah (Fame)
- Abdus-Shahwah (Lust)
- Abdus-Shiffah (Health)
- Abdus-Sukoon (Peace)
- Abdul-Mut’aa (Enjoyment)
- Abdul-Usrah (Family)
- and so on.
Those objects or creations of God became the object of worship of the Sons of Adam instead of being the means to serve and worship God; and this is indeed the test of this life. And Allah ﷻ warns us in the Glorious Quran that,
“… So whoever hopes to meet (the approval) of his Lord, he should do his deeds for His sake and join no one in the service of his Lord.” (Kahf, 110)
How can we expect to attain the closeness and pleasure of Allah ﷻ when we are enslaved and committing shirk with these objects?
How to become the true Abdullah?
One cannot become a true servant of God ﷻ without embracing the all-encompassing meaning of the word Islam which is the submission to the Will of God,
“Surely the religion in the Providence of Allah is Islam” (3:19)
In this regard, Ibn Qayyum (RA) mentioned that the summary of Islam is in the Shahadah:
- La Ilaha illallah: There is no deity worthy of worship besides Allah ﷻ and therefore there is no partner in his Ibadah.
- Muhammad Rasoolallah ﷺ: In the way that no-one can be worshipped like Allah ﷻ, no-one else can be followed in their conduct and character like Rasoolallah ﷺ.
Living by the Shahada necessitates that one must eliminate from their heart and mind- which is ‘la ilaha’ (no deity)- all the barriers that block a person to be a true servant of God; such barriers are sins, bad traits and things we get attached other than God, the Exalted. As aforementioned, the things we get attached to other than Allah ﷻ are:
- People (spouses/children/friends/family)
- Money, wealth and luxury
- Fame and name
- Health and peace
And, consciously with the heart and mind a person should affirm ‘ila ALLAH” which entails to give exclusive obedience to Allah by following the conduct and lifestyle of the Beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
In reality, such process of negating all sorts of disobedience to God and embracing exclusive obedience to God by following the best of creation of God, our Beloved ﷺ, necessitates a psycho-spiritual training through a course of Self-Purification or the purification of the body, mind and heart from sins and evil traits that stand as a false deity between the servant and Allah ﷻ.
In order for the modern Muslim to achieve this ultimate and sacred goal of exclusive servanthood to God, Exalted is He, Prophetic Path offers you in a unique and modern way a course of Self-Purification based on a prophetic methodology, that will help you in sha Allah to develop a proper and deep seated relationship with Allah ﷻ.
In today’s lesson we understand who the true Abd is and what the qualities of ‘Abdullah’ are. An Abdullah is someone who worships Allah ﷻ for Himself and no-one else. He is not attached to anyone else other than Allah ﷻ, although he is fulfilling the rights of others at the same time.
In the next few lessons in the series we will expound upon who the true servant is by analysing what humanity is enslaved to in the present age.
