The 10th of Ramadan marks the Yaum al-Wisal (death anniversary) of Sayyidia Khadija (RA), the esteemed wife of the Holy Prophet ﷺ and the Mother of the Believers. In the year of sadness the Holy Prophet ﷺ lost his dear wife who stood by his ﷺ side throughout their married life.
Meeting and Marriage
Sayyidah Khadija (RA) was a wealthy businesswoman, who had an impeccable personality and virtuous character. At the time of her employment, the Holy Prophet ﷺ was employed by her. This is how she learnt of his ﷺ exceptional morals, captivating her heart to such an extent that she, a lady of high status and wealth proposed to an orphan man with little to his ﷺ name.
She was a widow herself but she had refused many proposals that had come her way, as her interests simply lied with character. She married ﷺ when she was 40 and ﷺ was 25 years old.
She recognised the Holy Prophet’sﷺ exalted character over all others, which Allah ﷻ himself mentions in The Noble Quran “Surely, you are on an exalted standard of character”.
A pillar of strength to ﷺ and Islam
Sayyidah Khadija (RA) was an exceptional lady in history who did not just support her husband but had a substantial role in supporting Islam.
The strength and support she gave to the Holy Prophet ﷺ (which in fact is strength and support to Islam) was remarkable. She provided comfort and encouraged the Holy Prophet ﷺ during the early years of Prophethood at the most challenging of times.
She believed in Him ﷺ before anyone else. She was the first to support Himﷺ when Heﷺ encountered Jibraeel AS.
Without a speck of doubt she reassured her husband that Allahﷻ will not humiliate a man like the Holy Prophet ﷺ. This was the faith she had in him ﷺ.
Below is a nasheed ‘Zamilooni’ which is dedicated to the story between ﷺ and Khadijah RA when ﷺ received the first revelation.
Holy Prophet ﷺ Tribute to Khadijah RA
The Holy Prophet ﷺ said about Khadija RA:
“Was there anyone like her? I swear by God that He has not given me anyone as beneficent as she. When people denied me, she believed in me; she affirmed me when people labelled me a liar; when people deprived me, she supported me from her property; and God gave me children through her.”
One of the 4 best women of this Ummah
Abdullah bin Abbas (RA) Narrated, one day the Prophet ﷺ drew 4 lines on the ground and said, “Do you know the meaning of these 4 lines? The companions who were present there respectfully replied, “Allah SWT and his Prophet ﷺ knows very well”.
The Prophet ﷺ said that those four lines meant the four most graceful and great women of the universe, they are:
- Khadijah bint Khuwailid (RA)
- Fatima (RA) bint Muhammad ﷺ
- Mariam bint Imran
- Asiyah bint Mazahim (wife of Feraun or pharoh)
Blessed couple’s children
Sayyidah Khadija (RA) bore six of His ﷺ children in her womb and raised them. Allah ﷻ blessed them with:
- Qasim bin Muhammad Abul-Qasim)
- Zainab (RA) bint Muhammad
- Ruqayya(RA) bint Muhammad
- Umm-e-Kulthum (RA) bint Muhammad
- Fatima (RA) bint Muhammad
- Abdullah (Tayyeb & Taher) bin Muhammad.
Sayyidah Khadija (RA) paid full attention on her children bestowing immaculate characteristics in the children of The Holy Prophet ﷺ. She had sacrificed her ease and comfort for the sake of Islam. The Holy Prophet ﷺ spent more of his time in the house of Khadijah (RA) which actually lasted till the Hijrah. This house remained the centre of spiritual and religious activities where Allah ﷻ used to send “Wahi” and the angels.
Allah ﷻ sends Salam to Khadijah RA& promises her Jannah
One day Khadijah RA was walking to the Prophet ﷺ in Cave Hira to make sure he was ok and give him some food. Gabriel AS came and said to ﷺ:
“O Allah’s Messenger ﷺ! This is Khadijah, coming to you with a dish (or some food or drink). When she reaches you, greet her and give her salam on behalf of her Lord (Allah) and on my behalf, and give her the glad tidings of having a palace made of Qasab in Paradise, wherein there will be neither any noise nor any toil, (fatigue, trouble, etc.).” [Al-Bukhari]
When Khadijah RA entered the cave ﷺ told her of the good news for her and conveyed the Salams of Allah and Gabriel AS. How wonderful that Allah sends Salam! Khadijah AS was in awe when she found the words to speak she said, “Allah is peace, and from him is peace and Gabriel be peace”.
Departure from this transient world
Every great man has a great woman behind his greatness. Sayyidah Khadija (RA) was the great woman for the greatest of all men.
She was the most beloved wife of the most beloved ﷺ, and remained married to her alone until she departed the world.
On her passing away the heart of the Beloved ﷺ was pained. She died at the age of 65 years, 3 years before Hijrah. She breathed her last when the Prophet ﷺ was on her side nursing her. He ﷺ told her that she would be the most honoured woman in Paradise.
The Prophet ﷺ himself led her into the grave by his ﷺ own hands.
Lessons for us
We pray that Allah Ta’Ala raises her rank higher than what we are even capable of thinking. We pray that all the women of the world get at least an ounce of faith that she had.
We pray that we and our sisters, daughters, mothers aspire to be like her, Sayyidah Khadija (RA).
May Almighty Allah ﷻ increase the status of Sayyidah Khadija (RA).
MAY ALLAH ﷻ BE PLEASED WITH HER.
Ameen Ya Rabb.
