The youngest and most beloved daughter of the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Sayyidah Khadija (RA) departed from this world on the 3rd of Ramadan. She is amongst the many women of Islam that left behind a lasting legacy of courage, commitment and honour. She is the queen of Jannah and the leader of all women…She is Sayyidah Fatima Az-Zahra (RA).
Sayyida Fatima RA was the fourth daughter of the Apostle of Allah ﷺ. She had a very deep connection to her beloved father and would accompany him through the narrow streets of blessed Makkah to secret meetings of the Muslims.
On one occasion when she accompanied her beloved father to the Holy Ka’aba, one of the enemies of Islam threw the entrails on ﷺ whilst he was in prayer. Sayyida Fatimah RA, who was still a young child, went to her father’s aid and at a time when the Muslims were a minority and afraid to speak against the Quraysh, she boldly turned to her father’ ﷺ enemies, and lashed out at Abu Jahl and his troops. They were left astounded. Subhanallah!
Relationship with her Beloved Father ﷺ
After the passing of her beloved mother, another great woman, Sayyidah Khadijah RA, she quickly turned to the service of her beloved father, ﷺ and it is from this that she acquired the name “Umm Abiha”, “the Mother of her Father”.
Our Beloved Prophet ﷺ, loved his beloved daughter so much that he said, “My daughter is part of me. He who disturbs her in fact disturbs me and he who offends her offends me”. [Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 3767]. Sayyidina Umar al-Faruq (RA) also narrated that Holy Prophet ﷺ said to Sayyidah Fatima “May my parents be sacrificed upon you O’ Fatima”. (Shaukani in Maraqib al-Qarabah).
Father and daughter shared such a special bond that they were reunited in paradise very quickly after the departure of ﷺ from this temporal world. In a narration Sayyida Aisha RA asked Sayyida Fatima RA why she cried and then laughed when ﷺ spoke to her secretly. And Sayyida Fatima RA replied:
“He ﷺ informed me secretly of his death and so I cried. He then informed me secretly that I would be the first amongst the members of his family to follow him, so I laughed”
[Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 3427, Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2450]
Sayyida Fatima RA was a noble woman who inherited her father ﷺ’s noble manners, gentle speech, kind to the poor, giving to the needy and had no inclination towards the material world.
The queen of Jannah, our beloved mother Sayyidah Fatima RA, was married to the courageous and most noble Sayyidina Ali RA. The couple shared a wonderful, yet humble marriage. Both, husband and wife shared the same aspirations of piety and their children were the true beacons and carriers of Islam, Sayyidina Imam Hassan and Hussain RA.
Guidance of Sayyida Fatima RA
Being the daughter of the final prophet of Allah ﷺ, she carried an enormous accountability to preserve her beloved father’s teachings, and she faithfully fulfilled her responsibilities till her very last breath. Despite her authority and status, she knew her duties were towards Allah ﷻ. She did not wish to fulfil the expectations of the people, but she prized the expectations of Allah ﷻ alone. It was her modesty and humility that manifested her closeness to Allah ﷻ.
It is related once Sayyidah Fatimah (RA) said “Take every day one at a time. Do not expect major changes overnight, do not have such high expectations of yourself. I was the daughter of the Prophet ﷺ, what expectation do you think was upon me? It was not the expectation that I looked at”. It was asked, “What was it?” Sayyidah Fatima (RA) answered, “The right of Allah ﷻ that I had to fulfil. The expectation was a blessing as it kept me in check to make sure I was fulfilling my duty.” She (RA) continued, “My life is not known to many. This itself is a secret of closeness to Allah, to be modest and hidden and to stand for Allah ﷻ only when it is needed. Know when to speak and when not to.”
This saying of Sayyidah Fatima Az-Zahra (RA) serves as an index to her nobility and strength of character, which resembled her father’s ﷺ. She was believed to be the most superior and beloved after the Holy Prophet ﷺ.
It was narrated by Sayyidah Aisha RA that she had not seen anyone superior than Sayyidah Fatimah (RA) except the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (al-Tabrani, Al-Maujam al Ausat, 2721). Sayyidah Aisha (RA) also said that she has not seen anyone more truthful than Sayyidah Fatimah (RA) except the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. (Abu Nuem in Hilyatul Auliya wa Tabaqat al-Asfia 42).
Sayyidina Umar al-Faruq (RA) once visited the house of Sayyidah Fatimah (RA) and said: “By Allah! I have not seen anyone more beloved than you to the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. And even among people I have not seen anyone more beloved than you after the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. (Haakim in al-Mustadrak, 4736, Ahmad ibn Hanbal in Fazail as-Sahabah 532).
The Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ endowed his daughter with so much excellence and brilliance that she carried his aura even after his passing away. She inherited the Holy Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ divine knowledge, intellectual brilliance, purity, self-sacrifice, forbearance and generosity.
Despite witnessing her father’s struggles of victimisation and mistreatment by his own people, nothing dismayed her spirit. Her virtues gained her the title – The lady of light.
May Allah increase her rank and give us the ability to follow her beautiful example.
Please recite Al-Fateha for Sayyidah Fatimah, Queen of Paradise (RA).
