Our private parts are the most important organ of the body to be purified immediately after the tongue.
Puzzled? Don’t be!
Our Beloved Prophet ﷺ Muhammad ﷺ informed us in a most noble and generous Hadith that:
“Whoever protects his tongue from unlawful utterances and guards his private parts from illegal sexual relations, I shall guarantee him entrance into the Paradise.” (Bukhari)
How amazing is this Hadith! Allah ﷻ doesn’t demand a lifetime of worship or require charitable acts for entry into Jannah. We are promised paradise simply through the purification of the tongue and the private parts! This is a generous concession indeed and we should strive to apply it.
What the Holy Quran says about the private parts
Private parts are means by which we procreate. It is the instrument of God the Exalted to maintain the multiplication of human being on Earth. They are the basis of increasing families, and its corruption engenders the corruption of the whole society, because when the private parts are misuse to cheat, to fornicate or to commit adultery, they lead to the destruction of families and the society. Allah informs us the Noble Quran:
“Tell the believing men to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things), and protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts, etc.). That is purer for them. Verily, Allah is All-Aware of what they do.” (24:30)
Quran and Hadith both emphasize upon avoiding illicit or illegal sexual relations.
Illicit sexual relations
Illegal sexual relations can be defined as any form of sexual intercourse that is committed outside of the parameters of marriage. In this regard we read from “The Path of Muhammad” written by Imam Birghivi (RA) that:
“The only lawful sexual act is between husband and wife, for its purpose is to strengthen love and connection in the sacred institution of marriage, which is the foundation of Muslim society, and with God’s Will results in the creation of a new life. A child needs a mother and a father who will sustain, protect, and educate him together.”
The author continues and states:
“Under the influence of our evil-commanding ego, people misuse these blessings and turn them into instrument of affliction… The sexual organs which seems to have life on their own, lead people toward the destruction of the family, which is the core of society, and to perdition in this world and the Hereafter.”
The misuse of the sexual organs is known in our modern time as unwanted sexual behaviors. The most common of these instruments of affliction are:
Among other misuse of the private parts it is reported by Abu Hurayra (RA) that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Any of my people who go to sooothsayers and believe in their predictions and those who have sex with their wives during their periods or who have anal intercourse with them are guilty of denying what was revealed to Muhammad.” (Tirmidhi)
It is also forbidden in Islam to commit incest or engage in homosexuality, for the Messenger of God ﷺ said:
“Would ye really approach men in your lusts rather than women? Nay, ye are a people (grossly) ignorant! (27:55)
It is important to note that homosexuality and homosexual acts are completely forbidden in Islam.
However, Islam does NOT condone homophobic actions.
There is no compulsion in our faith and everyone is entitled to behave in a manner that they wish. Allah ﷻ has granted us the freedom of will to exercise freely and therefore if we disagree with homosexuality we can present the facts clearly and openly but it is a matter for the recipient to decide their actions without force or ill will being subjected upon them. Every person will be judged according to their actions.
A hidden sin related to the private parts is unnecessary touching or playing with one’s private parts which can lead to masturbation and some other unwanted sexual behaviors such as viewing porn. Allah ﷻ describes the proper use of the sexual organs in the Qur’an:
“Those who guard their sexual organs except with their spouses or those whom their right hands possess, for (with regard to them) they are without blame. But those who crave something beyond that are transgressors.” (Al-Mu’mun: 5-7)
Any person who is struggling to control his/her urges should fast according to Hadith (Narrated by al-Bukhaari (5065) and Muslim (1400)).
Masturbation is wrong because the person gets attached to an imagery sexual partner in his/her mental fantasies which distances him/her from seeking a real or physical spouse to marry. Even once married the person can become unsatisfied by the real life spouse due to real life being distinct from the glamorous fantasy in one’s mind. This may result in the person returning to masturbation which adversely affects familial relationships. Masturbation also is scientifically proven to increase prostate abnormalities and fatigue.
Concerning lawful intimate relationships between a husband and wife it is also important to mention one should not take advantage of one’s partner when they are sick, but it is a marital obligation for both spouses to satisfy each other’s sexual urges if they have no valid excuse to abstain from it.
It is also recommended to learn and practice the supplications one should recite before and after engaging in intimate marital relations. This will bring about blessings to the relationship, and is intended to protect the couple from Shaitanic interventions in the marriage.
It is also forbidden to show one’s private part to someone else except in case of medical needs such as medical examination, during pregnancy and similar cases. Other than those exceptions it is even considered shameful for spouses to look at each other’s sexual organs. In fact our Mother HadratA’ishah (RA), young wife of the Messenger of God ﷺ, said of her husband:
“Neither did he ever see my private parts, nor did I see his” (Tirmidhi)
Concerning other prohibitions related to private parts, we also read from Imam Birgivi’s (RA) book that:
“For a believer to turn his face or his back in the direction of the Ka’bah while going to the bathroom is considering insulting. It is also wrong to throw anything sacred or respected, or any material that man and beast might eat, into the toilet. To urinate in a place people wash themselves, or into a body of water that does not run, or into a container that is kept in a house, or in exposed places outdoors where people may see or walk, are all discouraged. Abu Hurayra reported that the Messenger of God ﷺ said,
“People who defecate or urinate in public places, where people may see or walk by, are accursed. (Muslim)
Positive usage of the Private Parts
A Muslim must keep his private parts clean by learning the proper ways of the Sunnah relating to istinjah (cleanliness of the private parts). We should be especially careful to avoid urine leaking and dropping onto garments. The Messenger of God ﷺ said:
“Keep yourself clean of urine, much of the suffering of the grave falls upon people who were unclean” (Ibn Abass, Bazzar)
It is also highly recommended to know the invocations of entering and exiting the toilet as these protect from the devil. You can find these duas on our website http://prophetic-path.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/Sunnah-and-Dua-book-final.pdf. One should thank Allah ﷻ for the ability to go to the toilet to relieve oneself as this is a blessing in itself.
