Fruits of knowledge & Character building training taught at Prophetic Path
Have you ever wondered what Islam really wants from you? Have you ever questioned what the end product of Islam is? How is a Muslim really supposed to behave? Is it all just about outward worship or is there more?
Using the example of a tree, we offer a vivid and detailed answer to these questions and simultaneously explain exactly what the Prophetic Path course has to offer.
We begin with the tree roots. Although underground and unseen, tree roots are very important as they are the foundations keeping the tree upright. The roots represent the following four conditions of one’s journey to the pleasure of Allah:
- Faith (Aqeedah) 2. Knowledge (Fiqh) 3. Repentance (Tawbah) 4. Striving (Mujahidah)
At Prophetic Path we train people to have strong roots and good foundations but not to become so entangled in the roots that one forgets about the trunk, the branches, the leaves and the fruits of the tree. We advise against debating for the sake of debating and rather encourage our students to convince others (Muslims/Non-Muslims) with the beauty of their character and in all circumstances to avoid rude behaviour and sarcastic comments.
The trunk represents sincerity and is the process of purification of one’s motives. At Prophetic Path we teach our students the importance of sincerity and purity of intention because if a person learns over time to become sincere with Allah and his Messenger Peace be Upon him then he will automatically behave sincerely with the rest of the creation. Otherwise, a person risks harming himself and others in the name of religion and philanthropy. For instance in the absence of sincerity a person could be helping others outwardly with the real intention and motive of defrauding them or more commonly for the purposes of being perceived by others as a charitable and religious person. Any good deeds committed without sincerity of heart lead to nothing other than the nullification of those deeds and the disdain and fury of the Almighty.
The trunk of the tree also represents the love of Allah and his beloved Prophet Muhammad Peace be Upon Him. At Prophetic Path we teach students what pure and true love really is from the point of view of our Creator and his Beloved peace be upon him and develop the thirst and desire of the student to fall deeply into that love which is unconditional and pure.
The branches on a tree represent purification of a person’s body, mind, and heart and at Prophetic Path we teach the following in relation to the path to Allah.
Branch 1: 7 Organs
The seven bodily organs including the tongue, eyes, ears, stomach, hands, feet and private parts are the first to be purified in one’s journey to the pleasure of Allah. Some of these organs if used correctly, such as the tongue have the power to build relationships whereas if used incorrectly have the power to sever the best relationship. In fact we can see that the majority of society’s quarrels and disputes lie in the abuse and misconduct of the tongue.
Moreover, when the seven organs are used to commit sin then dark energy enters and black dots appear on one’s heart until eventually the entire heart is covered in darkness and a person finds it extremely difficult to commit good deeds and to differentiate between right and wrong.
Therefore, Prophetic Path students are trained to rectify the sins of the organs one at a time, for 30 consecutive days until they have stopped using the organs negatively and are now trained to use their organs positively. An example is previously one cursed and backbit whereas after completing the training of the tongue he uses his tongue for the remembrance of Allah and for the benefit of humanity.
Branch 2: Mind
The second branch represents the second stage in the journey which is to purify the mind from the evil thoughts. Again, the student undertakes 30 days training to engage one’s mind in positibe thoughts regarding the Creator, his Messenger Peace be Upon Him, holding a good opinion of the creation and learning how to tackle the evil thoughts, inclinations and whispers of the devil.
Branch 3: Heart
The third branch represents the purification of the heart from the evil traits such as jealousy, vanity, lust, pride, arrogance and love of the world. The student is then taught how to replace the evil traits with the good traits such as humility, patience, love, compassion and so forth.
Leaves appear on healthy and strong branches and in the context of character building in Islam we teach our students that the leaves represent good deeds which are the direct result of purification. Examples of good deeds can include fasting, welfare of others, prayer, offering charity, performing pilgrimage, giving preference to the Sunnah (prophetic lifestyle), giving dawah and so on.
Is Purification the end objective?
Unfortunately, those on the path to Allah assume that performing purification is the end and he/she has attained his end goal. However, this is not the case as purification only represents the branches on a tree and the fruits of the tree are yet to be borne.
For example, some seekers are duped into thinking that they have become pious and purified people however the behaviour they display contradicts their claimed states. These are those individuals who outwardly present themselves as pious and religious people whereas when a person interacts with them they behave unjustly and harshly against the pure etiquettes and manners of Islam.
It is for these reasons that Allah Ta’ala has repeatedly reminded us that we should not become lost in the means and keep our focus on the end result. For example Allah Ta’ala reminds us that fasting outwardly by merely keeping the stomach hungry yet committing backbiting ultimately results in the bad deeds outweighing all of the good. In the same way Allah the Exalted reminds us in a Hadith Qudsi that He only accepts the Salah of a person who is humble and treats the creation well, not the person who boasts over the creation.
We should ask ourselves that if this is Allah’s reaction to the compulsory (fardh) actions then how would he treat the optional (nafl) acts such as dhikr of the person whose character was manifestly evil and unjust. Therefore, our focus should not just be on the outward religious acts but our character and that which results in the ultimate pleasure of Allah.
When the tree has matured and the branches have grown the tree begins to bear fruit but at the beginning of the season they remain unripe. These unripe fruits represent acts such as discharging the rights of Allah the Exalted, the rights of Prophet Muhammad Peace be Upon Him, the rights of creation, parents, spouses, siblings, relatives, neighbours, teacher, water, environment, earth, animals, natural resources, government, colleagues and the rest of humanity and creation. At Prophetic Path we focus on teaching students to develop their character and personality to become mature, beneficial and compassionate individuals who seek to serve the needs of creation rather than being egoistic and self-centred benefitting only themselves.
For example the blessed companions and righteous followers of Islam were purified to such an illuminated degree that humanity fell to their feet and longed to be in their company. When these people left their city the people would mourn and grieve. Whereas, our condition has become such that people are trying to avoid us and want us to leave their cities and countries.
The finest tree amongst the rest of the trees is the one which is healthy, upright, and the most fruitful. The edible and ripened fruit on a tree represent the following beautiful and prophetic traits which are the keys to the pleasure of Allah and his Beloved Messenger peace be upon him. These are the traits that should enter into a person upon completion of the Prophetic Path course. The beloved Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him states that if you want to see the people of Jannah walking amongst you, then see those with these qualities in them.

Summary of the teachings
The aim of the Prophetic Path course is to develop and build the character of each student on an individual basis so that he becomes someone who has the most beautiful relationship with his Creator, Allah the Almighty and his Beloved Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him, and become a means of mercy for all of the creation.
The revolution of love and change comes with one person at a time so that each person becomes a beacon of love and hope for another and so the ripple effect begins. Learn not to get lost in merely learning for the sake of learning or debating. But, learn to just become a true Muslim and eventually people will begin to love Islam again.
As one of the wise have said, and remarkably fitting to this blog, is the beautiful saying, be like a tree, “Be fruitful wherever Allah has planted you”.
